Leave No Girl Behind
The importance of educating girls during these times is more important than ever. Covid-19 has had many affects on us as individuals and the world as we now know it.
One of the most frightening projections released in the 2020 Global Economics Prospects Report is that an additional 71M people will be pushed into extreme poverty throughout this pandemic. This will also see more girls & women being placed into an even more vulnerable position than they currently find themselves in.
According to the world bank providing education to girls is seen as an essential element and a central part of the need if we are to eradicate global poverty in all its forms. Currently 130 million girls globally are out of school and it is estimated that of that 15 million girls of primary school age will never in their lifetime enter a classroom. We know that educated women are healthier, have more productive & profitable plots, participate in formal labour markets, have fewer children & marry later all contributing towards eradicating poverty in all its forms.
With a teenage daughter of my own I could not imagine her opportunities being lesser than those of her two brothers. Should her opportunities to the basic right of education be a privilege while her brothers are freely provided with the opportunities which education brings with it? Should she not have the same knowledge in life to choose her own path, while her brothers do?
Education is the key to making an impactful and longstanding change. At SolarBuddy we have spent the last 4 years educating & raising awareness in the developed economies world to enable those in the developing economies the opportunity to be educated and take them-selves out of the cycle of poverty into which they are born. We believe that providing the opportunity for education to thrive is the only solution to ensuring the UN SDG’s are met by 2030, addressing the issue at the grass roots level rather than dealing with the ongoing symptoms, never changing the course of action which repeats the same cycles of poverty in all its forms.
Many of the issues which we face in the developed economies today could be avoided if we started with addressing the issue rather than focus on addressing the symptoms and none are more important than the education of girls.
To bring awareness to this issue we are coming together with cievents to host an event for International Day of The Girls on 14th October, to raise awareness and provide 2000 girls in Vanuatu with a SolarBuddy light to take themselves out of energy poverty and provide them with the opportunity to an equal opportunity.
If you would like to join us for this hybrid event MC’d by Shelly Horton you can register here IDOTG Event and be a part of the change.
While my daughter has had the privilege to attend school alongside her brothers and is following her dreams, I also know that she may yet need to fight for pay parity or a seat at the boardroom table. By educating girls however we can change this for girls everywhere.
If you would like to book a keynote for your next event addressing the issue of the UN SDG’s and how we can collectively work together to achieve these please contact here Email.
